Today will be exciting from start to finish as we begin with Showmanship Finals and continue into our PGS, Steer and Bred & Owned shows. Best of luck to everyone hitting the ring today!

Building Your Angus Network

The National Junior Angus Show is a great time to renew old friendships and create new ones. A simple introduction will go a long way. I recommend talking to breeders and enthusiasts of the breed that share the same passions that you do. Ask them about their operations and what they are doing to become successful. We do not know what the future holds, and this introduction could create endless future opportunities, including possible herd investments, internships and even a career.

Every year at junior nationals I like to walk down
each aisle to view cattle, see what pedigrees are working for others, and build networks. It is also a nice time to catch up with friends that I have met through conferences such as LEAD and Raising the Bar. By attending junior nationals and conferences, I have met so many people from all over the country.

There are activities throughout the week at nationals that give you opportunities to connect
with others. These include serving as a delegate, competing in contests, and participating in the Angus Mentoring Program.

I know that my generation is glued to their phones. By simply putting down your phone
and networking with others it will help you build your communication skills. There are only a handful of opportunities to build these relationships throughout the year, so make sure you take advantage of each one!

You Never Know Who is Watching

Growing up with an older brother, I watched him closely and mirrored his actions. Even to this day, I use his examples to guide my decisions. For my brother, there wasn’t just me watching him, but countless others. He has given me and others a constant example of how to act throughout my life. This should hopefully strike a parallel with you. There is always someone watching you, whether you realize it or not.

There are three categories that everyone will go through in their life
: you are younger and look up to older siblings or peers, you are an intermediate age where youth have started to look up to you, but you have not realized it yet, or you are older yet and have come to the realization that everything you do is being watched. This middle group is the most crucial. If you are like me, you won’t realize that there is someone watching you until several years later. Because I had a great role model in my brother, I aimed to always do the best I could. This led to positive actions from others that looked up to me, without me even knowing.

Regardless of your age, there will always be someone who looks up to you. Take this fact and use it to your advantage. Always be diligent in your work,
truthful in your words, and show compassion to others. By aiming to be your best, you can influence other people to be their best, leading to a greater generation of youth, and one day, leaders.
