While reproductive technologies are great tools, reproductive efficiency still goes back to basic management.


When cattle producers call or see Vitor Mercadante, they want to talk about timed artificial insemination protocols and/or embryo transfer. That’s a good thing. After all, the Virginia Tech beef extension specialist is a reproductive physiologist by training. However, at the Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle symposium in Athens, Ga., Sept. 4-5, Mercadante preached the basics before sharing the latest AI protocols.

Hurricane Helene Disaster Resources 

USDA increasing flexibility; state cattlemen’s associations accepting donations.


The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association on Oct. 4 shared updated information about disaster relief programs available to cattle producers affected by Hurricane Helene and opportunities to support disaster recovery through NCBA state affiliates.

Ringworm is Unsightly, but Temporary

Mizzou Economists Find Mixed Outlook for U.S. Agriculture

U.S. net farm income in 2024 was $137 billion, falling slightly below the USDA’s September forecast and $9 billion lower than the 2023 figure, according to a FAPRI update. Further declines in income are projected in 2025, as some moderation in production expenses and high cattle prices are not enough to offset the effects of lower crop prices.
